Full program notes
In When Night Falls, we’ll take you from the last colors of sunset to the stillness of the early hours. We chose art songs and lullabies for the different ways they evoke that passage. Some linger in the warmth of twilight, while others draw us into the quiet of the night.
The combination of contralto, flute, and guitar lets us explore that change on an intimate scale. Listen for the way the flute and voice trade phrases and how the warmth of the guitar draws us into the lullabies. We hope these songs give you a moment to slow down and enjoy the quiet together.
Music by Giordano, Caccini, Bellini, Fauré, de Falla, Montsalvatge, Porro, and De Curtis.

Historical context
Our program brings together several traditions of song, from Caccini’s early Italian solo song and Bellini’s lyrical writing to Fauré’s French mélodie and the songs of de Falla and Montsalvatge. The lullaby connects this repertoire to an everyday tradition of singing. A melody meant to soothe one person can carry that same intimacy into a room full of listeners.
