About the Artist: Ben Rubie started playing violin at age 5, studying at Harlem's highly regarded Opus 118 program. At age 11, he joined the classical Inter School Orchestra and attended a Harlem School of the Arts jazz program taught by a Berklee professor Rob Thomas. In middle school, he was given special permission to attend the Calhoun High School jazz camp and played as part of The Jazz Mafia with Roy Ayers at Central Park's Summer Stage
Ben attended New York University on the Steinhardt scholarship for jazz violin. He is a recipient of the National Young Arts award for three years in a row and a two-time Billy Strayhorn award winner. Ben is also a Virtu Violin Recipient. Ben was recently selected to audition for the prestigious Herbie Hancock program at UCLA in LA. In 2025, Ben was the violinist for the Mahavishnu Project, a modern iteration of the original band with the blessings of the original members John McLaughlin, Jan Hamer, Jean-Luc Ponty, Jeff Beck, and Billy Cobham.
About the Venue: Daruma is a safe, fun and friendly martial arts training environment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
What's the music?
We will be playing compositions composed by me Ben Rubie, as well as maybe a piece or two by a great American songbook composer. These pieces are very special to me as all of them are composed using my own experiences and emotions as the catalyst, We sincerely hope you enjoy!
Where does this music come from?
This music is derived from “jazz” or African American Classical music. My music especially is very inspired by this artform as well as other contemporary genres; such as classical music, pop and r and b. I hope this music resonates and allows you to see the parallels between all of these genres.
